A home is not home after a Gnome

Faced with a garden gnome the common reaction is to keep their hands in horror and utter an expression of disgust while wondering how we could support such a creature to remain in their own backyard. On the other hand we are told by reliable source that the gnome population of Southern Germany is close to four million euros, and when you get to watch, there are a fair number shown in the United States.

They were expected to help around the house and garden and rural areas often lived in the rafters of barns, where they like to keep an eye on the animal ownerand crops, fruit and vegetables.

Over the years German gnome makers tightened their skills and became master craftsmen. At its peak the Griebel gnome factory in East Germany has produced some 300 different gnome characters. "We ask that the garden gnomes ... they are no longer ridiculed and that will be released in their natural habitat," the Front's Paris wing said in a statement following its weekend strike.

Keeping the Weeds Out of Your Lawn and Garden

One of lifes necessary evils is dealing with weeds in your lawn and garden. There's really no other way around it because anywhere you grow plants worth keeping the weeds are sure to follow. Even the liberal application of chemical and organic herbicides, and weed barrier fabrics are not fool proof against the infiltration of those unwanted plants. When this is the case the best plan of attack is pulling those pesky weeds by hand.

When hand pulling there are some specific techniques that will allow you to make sure that particular weed will not make a return appearance.

First off you have to get up close and personal with the weed. As you get ready to pull you need to grip the base of the weed at the point where it enters the soil. This helps to prevent the weed from breaking off leaving the root behind. In cases of hard to pull weeds consider getting a weed pulling tool. By inserting the forked bit down along the length of the root it will sufficiently loosen the soil to allow complete removal.

Another thing to remember is that the bigger the weed the harder it can be to pull. This is because the root system can be very long holding the top part of the plant firmly in place. To make weeding easier water your lawn or garden before hand to moisten the soil; this allows the root to slide out of the ground easier.

Also consider weeding earlier in the day when it is cool outside. Weeding in the middle of the day is a sure way to make doing so a not real fun experience. The idea is to get into the habit of pulling weeds regularly during the week so do it when you will be most comfortable. If you have a compost pile throw those soon to be dead weeds into it and turn them under. The heat generated by the composting organic matter will quickly kill the weed and any seeds that it may contain.

One last advantage of hand pulling weeds is it allows you to get up close to all your other plants. This gives you the opportunity to notice problems that you might not have otherwise seen. This can help improve the health and well being of your lawn and garden as you work to remedy any problems that come to your attention.

Once you have eradicated a good portion of your weed problem its time to start looking at ways to keep them to a minimum. In the garden and flower beds this can be accomplished by using a thick layer of mulch. This not only keeps weeds from sprouting but also helps to retain moisture and releases organic nutrients back into the soil.

If you have an overwhelming weed problem then chemical weed killers can be used to deal with the situation quickly. They work quickly and can eradicate large amounts of weeds effectively. If you do use such a product do so carefully as they are harmful and can damage or kill your desirable plants. As an alternative consider using a more organic weed killer made from common household products.

Keeping the weeds out of your lawn and garden takes a little time and patience at first. Once they have been effectively dealt with keeping them out of your landscape is little more then pulling the few that do sprout once or twice a week.

A Guide To Vacuum Cleaner Repair

It's unbelievably easy to do some vacuum cleaner repair yourself if you understand the basic damage that might occur to your vacuum cleaner. Once you learn how to do it, your friend will definitely envy your knowledge or even pay you to repair their vacuum cleaners.

The very first thing you need to consider in vacuum cleaner repair works is find the source of the problem. Always consider asking this three questions:-

1) What has causing it to malfunction?

2) How does it happen?

3) Is it easy to repair? (Very important. If it is not, send it to a real specialist)

Damage to the parts of vacuum is the one that always cause problems. You need to check the whether the belt of the vacuum cleaner is still functioning or not. How are you going to know whether it is still working? Make sure the belt does not snapped or got stuck around the brush that is located inside the vacuum cleaner. You will have to unscrew the small plate located on the brush in order to have a better look into this problem.

If you really want to repair the vacuums yourself, you have to clean up the vacuum agitator brush from any dirt, dust, debris or hair. In order to do this, cut the damage belt with a new belt and screw the plate back to its original position.

Some people prefer to use a bagged vacuum cleaner,. The only drawback is the bag need to be change regularly and swap it with a new one once it is full. The dirt will cloak the hose when the bag is fully overloaded if you forget to change the bag and you have to spend unnecessary cost to repair it where you can avoid this in the first place.

Sometimes, the vacuum cleaner does not have the suction power as before after you have used it frequently. You might think it is due to bag overloaded but after you have changed it, the suction power is still weak. To make things right, check inside the hose. There might be something slightly bigger than the hose that block the circulation of the vacuum cleaner. Use a small stick or broom that can fit inside the hose and push it out.

If you have notice, there are only 3 things that cause the malfunctioning of a vacuum cleaner:-

1) Damage belt

2) Agitator brush problem

3) Blockage of the host

Now that you are armed with this information, the next time your wife ask you to check what is the matter with the vacuum cleaner, you can show your wife how good you are in becoming a vacuum cleaner repair specialist by doing the steps mention in this article.

Vacuum Sealers - Benefits

Vacuum Sealer Benefits

Vacuum sealers are great for a variety of reasons: (1) economy, (2) freshness, (3) convenience, and (4) for cooking.

Economy

There are a lot of ways that a vacuum sealer will save you money. You can keep leftovers longer, store seasonal produce longer, buy things on sale and in bulk, and store your garden vegetables longer.

If you eat leftovers, you know that a lot of people simply throw away a lot of food. The food budget is significant because it is one of the budgets that, if well-managed, can make a big difference in the typical families expendable income. Some people will simply vacuum seal their leftovers as if it is a TV dinner or else they will seal a portion of the meal for a future date. It is really up to you. If you don't want leftovers several days in a row, a good vacuum sealer can mitigate that problem. Then, you can happily pull out the future leftovers when it sound appealing again.

If you do not eat leftovers, economy is still on your side. You can purchase seasonal fruits and vegetables when they are extra fresh and inexpensive. Then, you can use a vacuum sealer to preserve the fruits and vegetables for a long time. This process also works with meat. Some people buy meat, in bulk, and freeze it to save a lot of money. What you may notice is that a lot of people lose a large amount of their gardens and they will also not be able to buy large seasonal items in bulk because they have not figured economical ways to store things.

Freshness

Most people agree that fresh garden produce tastes better than store-bought produce that is much older. The fact that food is fresh makes a big difference in the taste. Also, items that are in season have a much better flavor than out of season items.

When you purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, in season, it follows that your frozen fruits and vegetables will have much better flavor. If you care about how the food tastes, this is a big deal for you.

Convenience

It is convenient to have a way to store your meats and fruits and vegetables long-term. It is more convenient to be able to store something long-term and then eat it as you wish. If you are under pressure to eat food before it spoils, that isn't convenient.

It is also convenient to have freshly sealed items on hand. Many people love to pull out their garden produce that has been sealed and use it. If you put away a lot of your favorite items, it makes cooking a lot more convenient. For example, if you love fresh green beans, vacuum seal a bunch of them in the Summer and eat them all Winter long.

Cooking

There are cooking benefits to a vacuum sealer. For one thing, you can marinade meats and seal it that way for easy cooking. Some people find that they simply like to combing ingredients into a vacuum sealer pouch because it locks in all the flavors and keeps thing moist. You can also dehydrate fruits and vegetables and then use the vacuum sealer to make dried soups.

A popular way of cooking is called sous vide (French for under vacuum). We all know how much the French love food. What they do is to combing the ingredients into a vacuum sealed pouch and then cook it in the pouch. If you have ever eaten this kind of food, you know how tender and moist everything is. What vacuum sealers are known for is locking in flavor and moisture. Lots of flavor and tender moist meat makes meals taste great. If you watch cooking shows, you may have seen this cooking technique in action. Some of the chefs on the Food Network use chamber vacuum sealers for this type of cooking.

Final Tip

A popular trend is that of the chamber vacuum sealer. Historically, chamber sealers were only used in high-end gourmet kitchens. However, nowadays the price of chamber vacuum sealers is coming down so that many homeowners are purchasing them.

The Beauty of Edging Your Flower Garden

The edging surrounding your garden is practically as important as the flowers themselves. The edging frames your garden, like the frame of a picture. It gives it well defined boundaries to separate your flower garden from the rest of your yard. A good edging enhances the beauty of your flower garden, turning it into a masterpiece.

These is an assortment of edging options to choose from, and it is up to you to pick the one that will best compliment your garden. A low retaining wall, made from brick or rock and mortar, is a popular choice, as it is solid and permanently boarders your garden. These types of wall edgings can be quite expensive; however, and you may decide that you would like to choose something not as permanent to edge your garden. You never know when you will want your garden to expand!

Another option is to simply line up bricks or rocks, using no mortar. Bricks can be lined up, stacked in a short wall, or set up diagonally, leaning against one another. Rocks can also be lined up or stacked to crate an edging for your garden. Rocks should be small enough to be easily moved, while large enough to make a visual impact. Rocks can be found while digging in your garden or for other landscaping projects, or in a friend's yard or empty lot. Just be sure to ask for permission before taking rocks from someone elses property.

You can also purchase edging materials at a home improvement store or garden center. Have a look around and check out all the options that might look good in your garden. You can choose from plastic edging, which provides a simple border when stuck vertically in the ground, tiny fences, landscaping timbers, and boarders made from artificial rock. The options are almost endless. Just be sure that what ever you decide, that you select a good quality, durable product. You need something that will hold up, so you wont have to replace your edging year after year.

Border plants, such as perennials like alpine phlox, make a beautiful, natural edging. Low growing plants that grow quickly and can be divided and replanted each spring make a nice choice, so that you do not have to purchase new annuals every year. As with selecting any plants for your garden, make sure that you select plants that will work with your climate and the amount of sun your garden receives.

The lush, thick growth of comfrey, make it an excellent choice to border a large garden. It will stop grass from encroaching on your garden with its heavy growth. The flowers are beautiful and will be attractive in your garden, and you can use the leaves as mulch when they fall off. Comfey is only appropriate for large gardens, however, as smaller gardens can quickly become overtaken.

A delicious choice for edging your garden would be to plant strawberries or herbs. You can use the fresh herbs in your meals when cooking - just clip off as much as you need when you visit your garden.

You can select from a variety of plants, rocks, bricks or store bought edging to border your garden. Keep in mind that the edging you select should serve as a frame to accentuate and display your flower garden as though it is a work of art.

Recycled Metal Garden Art - Fun, Playful and Eco-Friendly

Avid gardeners are generally very green folk. They like digging in the dirt, recycling and composting, and easily incorporate other people's discards into their outdoor decor. When looking for interesting pieces to decorate their yards, recycled metal garden art is a popular choice.

Recycled metal garden art is a true reflection of the artist's personality and ingenuity. What may be trash to you or me is reborn in the hands of these eco-artists. One artist, Andrew Chase, makes amazing mechanical structures of giraffes, elephants and robots from recycled automobile and plumbing parts. He gets discarded engine and transmission parts from his local auto repair, and by combining these with plumbing pipes and fixtures he is able to create wonderful, moving creatures.

Old oil tanks and drums are quite commonly used to make metal garden art. Painted oil tanks that once supplied fuel to cottagers are cut down into brightly colored critters, including dogs with bones, dancing sheep or moose, lurking alligators and climbing frogs. For something a little different you can even add a diva or a devil!

In Haiti a growing crafts community is creating wonderful metal wall sculptures from flattened drums which were once used to transport oil or other products. After removing the ends these drums are flattened and then carved by hand into exotic works of art. Using only hammers, chisels and other simple tools, the artists carve elaborate, decorative designs out of the steel. Haitian drum art is world renowned and spreading in popularity. It makes a striking piece of wall art for inside the house or in the garden.

Saving bicycles from untimely graves a new breed of artists are using recycled bikes parts to create their art. Bike art has become so popular it is a genre of its own. With gears and wheels, nuts and bolts, spokes and bars, a bicycle is the perfect raw material for recycled metal art.

Part of the appeal of recycled metal garden art is the weathered and often rusted look of some of the pieces. Rusted metal has a natural, earthy feel to it and blends with the garden rather than making a loud statement. For this reason a lot of gardeners seek out pre-rusted metal art.

The ingenuity of artists working with recycled metal never ceases to amaze me. Add some recycled metal art to your yard and add instant character and charm.

How to Vacuum Your Swimming Pool

Here's the question of the swimming pool season: How and how often do I need to vacuum my pool?

The answer: Vacuuming should be done as often as you think. Normally, once a week is sufficient. Generally speaking, the more a pool is used the less vacuuming it needs. It's pretty simple. Many pool owners enjoy vacuuming on a nice sunny summer morning . Many of our customers use a good automatic pool cleaner to do this work for them. Even so, a good manual vacuum is good to do once each month.

The "HOW TO" is essentially the same for both In ground and Above ground Pools:

1. If your pool is equipped, be sure that the valve on the suction line coming into the pump is selected for the port (either skimmer or lower suction fitting) you will be using to vacuum.

2. Attach the vacuum hose to the vacuum head (the piece with the brushes or wheels on it). The better quality vac hoses come with a swivel end to prevent tangling of the hose. Be sure that this is the end that is attached to the vac head; if not the system will draw air & not work properly.

3. Make sure the hose is secure (even use a hose clamp if needed) and that the vacuum head is firmly attached to the pole.

4. Place the vacuum head, hose & pole into the deep end of the pool (make sure one end of the pole is sticking out of the water!)

5. Take the UN-attached end of the vac hose & hold it in front of one of the water return fittings. This will fill the hose with water and prevent binding of the pump with air from the hose. You know you've got enough water in the hose when the vacuum head bubbles up to the surface of the pool water.

6. Put your hand over the end of the hose to keep the water IN.

7. Place the skimmer basket adapter (looks like a disc with a nozzle on top) on top of the skimmer basket. Always use a basket to prevent the possible suction of a large object from getting stuck in the skimmer or in the underground line.

8. If vacuuming through a lower suction or dedicated vacuum line without a basket (instead of through the skimmer), use a leaf trap to prevent clogging of the plumbing lines or hoses.

9. After you have placed the hose on the adapter fitting you will probably notice a sudden drop in filter activity. This is normal. The filter system is just readjusting itself to the change in suction. Let it operate for about 30 to 90 seconds. It should automatically bleed any air out of its system and return to normal operation. You'll hear the sound becoming "normal" again.

10. Vacuum away! Remember to brush & vacuum the sides of the pool as well as the bottom. Dirt, biofilm build-up, and algae will settle there as well. And don't forget behind any ladders.

For other swimming pool cleaning tips, please see our other ezine articles on the 5 Keys to Pool Care.

Troubleshooting:

No suction - Either the hose has come off of the basket, the filter has lost its prime (not sucking water) or the hose a leak (make sure you've got the proper end of the hose on the vac head). If you have more than one suction line, be sure you're drawing from the proper one.

Dirty water returning to the pool - If you have a sand filter, DO NOT BACKWASH THE FILTER BEFORE VACUUMING. Backwashing stirs up the sand & prevents good trapping of dirt for several HOURS. In cartridge or DE filters, this rarely happens.

Suction is lost after a couple of minutes -  How dirty is the pool? If it's REALLY dirty, you may be better off vacuuming to direct waste (sand filter) or otherwise vacuuming directly out of the pool by-passing the filter.

Bissell 16N5 Healthy Home Vacuum Cleaner Review

The Bissell "Healthy Home Upright Vacuum Cleaner" bagless model 16N5 has a retail price of $249.99. I got one for my Houston auto insurance agency from an online company for $174 delivered. After a few weeks my wife made me bring it home because it is better than what we have at the house. So it has been used for business and home use.

I selected this machine after reading reviews that were mostly positive. My box did not come with an owner's manual but everything is simple so I can do without that. There were only 2 pieces to install with 2 screws each, and that was easy (hint: put the handle on first and then install the cord holder). The usual tools were included and they are adequate, however a longer extension would be better.

The model 16N5 has a 15" wide sweeper and that makes vacuuming faster. Suction and cleaning power are good. The machine seems especially good at picking up pet hair. The box talks about great edge cleaning but it doesn't pick up all dirt along the edges (I have not had any vacuum's that are really good at cleaning edges). The brush automatically stops when the cleaner is upright and that is a good feature. There is a HEPA filter, and the air doesn't smell dusty when cleaning. Most vacuums have a one year warranty but the Bissell "Health Home" includes a five year warranty. Other features include a headlight and a lifetime belt.

Negatives include the dust tank that doesn't hold much, and needs to be emptied frequently. And the machine is a little on the heavy side for carrying it up and down stairs.

Overall I think the Bissell 16N5 is a good value for the money.

American Boxwood

The eastern United States is no stranger to the beauty of the American Boxwood. The bush has been planted and cultivated into breathtaking lawn scape for about three hundred years now. The reason why this hardy bush is still such a favorite is the ability to trim them as topiary into any shape or size. Some of the most intricate lawn designs, including everything from mazes to animals, have been made from the boxwood. Also, you can just stick with the name and keep them into "box" shape.

The American Boxwood is a very hardy bush, being able to take cold conditions in stride. Even if piled with ice and snow, the branches will resist breaking. Also, the wind during the stormy season won't be able to cause as much injury to the plant. This makes it a perfect windbreaker. During low rain seasons, the plant will still be able to maintain health. It has been know to keep it's vitality even in drought-like conditions. This variety of boxwood is very resistant to disease, which also makes it long living as well. Another reason why being resistant to diseases is good is that it can help prevent the spread of diseases from one section of shrubbery to the next.

Pruning is actually optional with the Buxus Sempervirens, or American Boxwood. Even when left to grow into it's own natural shape, the health of the bush will continue. If a person wants to shape the bush, they should start early after planting. If deciding to prune the boxwoods, early December is the most recommended time of year. This is quite convenient for some boxwood lovers since much of their foliage can be brought into the home to add to the winter decorations.

Preparation and planting are also easy to do. Some pointers include giving the boxwood partial sunlight, though it is able to take a spot with full sun exposure as well. Also, the surrounding area should also be considered. The American Boxwood can grow all the way up to 20 feet tall if not trimmed or trained. The height and width make it a great choice to use as a property screen. The dense dark green foliage with the boxwood's oval shaped leaves make a very ascetically pleasing choice. Another reason why many gardeners are looking to add the boxwood to their lawn space is because of the small flowers of the bush. Though not spectacular in color as they range from a lighter green to a pale yellow, they have a freshly sweet, pungent smell which is very attractive.

When you have decided that you want to include the boxwood into your garden or yard, it is important to make sure that the bush sets down a good root system. Since the boxwood has a shallow root system, make sure that the soil is very well drained as to prevent root rot. After a good growing season, your American Boxwood will be able to thrive and look good.

Upgrade From a Simple Cordless Leaf Blower to a Garden Blower Vac

Are you into gardening and stuff? Or are you just some regular guy or girl who just needs to get rid of those messy leaves that are starting to pile up in your yard? Either way, you will still have to make use of different cleaning and sweeping tools. So if you haven't got one yet, maybe it's time for you to think about it and start checking those necessary equipment out online or in nearby stores.

However, if you already have one tool that you've been using for a long time, say, a cordless leaf blower, you might want to consider upgrading or changing into something else that's more useful and more convenient. There are other gardening tools that have far more advanced features and benefits than your average leaf blower. One example is the garden blower vac.

This tool, the garden blower vac, is what some call a combination of or a crossbreed between a leaf blower and a vacuum cleaner. Others would call it the leaf blower with a twist. Indeed, this blower-slash-vacuum tool is really something. However, the important question is if it really is that better and more effective than your leaf blower.

Leaf blowers are known to be very much efficient in blowing those dead leaves and dirt and piling them up together so that you can easily pick them up afterwards and place in a trash bin or bag. The equipment has a long nose or nozzle where air with greater strength and speed comes out. This is quite a great tool especially the cordless type. Yet, it's not really that convenient compared to garden blower vacs.

The blower/vacuum product saves you the burden of picking up those dead leaves after you have gathered them in a certain area and placing them in a garbage bag or container for disposal. With its sucking capabilities similar to that of a vacuum cleaner, the amount of time and energy you normally spend while doing the task mentioned earlier is being lessened. Therefore, you'll have more time and energy to do other important things.

Another nice thing about garden blower vacs is the easy switching between the blower and vacuum mode. If you think you need to remove first some parts or install additional ones before you can use the product as a vacuum or as a blower, then you're wrong. It's really just a switch away, so easy and so convenient.

Moreover, these blower vacs are available in electric and gas or petrol powered types. This allows you to choose which kind is best for your needs. Known brands or models that you can check out are Black and Decker, Flymo, Ryobi and others.

Finding John Deere Lawn Mower Parts

I am the proud owner of a John Deere LT155 riding lawn mower. Rarely do I have any troubles with it, but occasionally I have to replace some parts. Even the highest quality machines, like the John Deere, will need work done on them at some point - even if it's just routine maintenance.
I've found that my John Deere is easy to work on, and the manual provides great direction on how to repair it. Because John Deere is such a popular brand, finding parts is not hard at all...but finding affordable John Deere parts can be a bit more difficult. The dealers will have all John Deere parts you'll ever need and can easily order it for you if they don't currently have it in stock. They may even carry some used parts that will work great for whatever your repair. When I need a part for my John Deere garden tractor, I usually start by calling the dealer first to ask if they have any used parts. If not, I then ask how much it would cost for the new replacement part and jot the amount down. By doing this, I also get the exact name of the part I need and write this down as well.

After this, I get online and try to find the part cheaper elsewhere. Often, I can get a cheaper used or new part online and have it shipped to my house. Of course you have to factor in the shipping costs when looking for parts this way, but a lot of the suppliers have already taken this into account and have priced their parts accordingly.

By doing this method of research, you can save yourself some money but still get what you need for your John Deere equipment. There are a wealth of John Deere parts suppliers on the web and, with a little time, you should be able to find what your looking for at a reasonable price. If you do happen to run stuck, the dealer will always have what you need. John Deere dealers can also provide some great support on how to install the item if you need help. Since I'm not a mechanic by trade, I can use a little help occasionally. I have a few great John Deere dealers in my area and check in with them for the more difficult repairs I encounter with my John Deere mower.

Once you've located the part, you have to install it. Unless you're a really skilled mechanic with John Deere mowers, this usually requires a good manual. I rely on mine for anything outside of the regular maintenance ie. servicing it, airing up tires etc. If you don't have a manual for your John Deere, you can also purchase these from the dealer or try to find a new or used one online. There are many sources for used manuals available online. If you type the name/model of your John Deere into your favorite search engine, you should easily find what you're looking for.

Leaf Blowers

Leaf blowers were first manufactured in Japan during the 1970s, and made their debut in the Untied States towards the end of the decade. The annual sales by 1990, reached an estimated 800,000 in the country. It has become very popular due to its efficiency and effectiveness in ground maintenance. Today, leaf blowers are used by almost every family for cleaning patios, lawn trash, leaves, etc.

Leaf blower types can be classified according to their power sources. In electric-powered leaf blowers, an electric motor drives the fan, so they require an electrical power source provided from an electrical outlet, through an extension cord. However, there are also rechargeable battery operated units available, more suitable for smaller areas because of their limited operating time. Mixing oil and gasoline operates gas-powered leaf blowers. 2-stroke gasoline engines generally power backpack blowers, while wheeled units generally have 4-stroke gasoline engines.

There are three main types of Leaf Blowers: Handheld, backpack and wheeled or walk-behind.

The handheld leaf blowers are the most popular among homeowners, mainly because of convenience and portable size. They also provide all the power and capacity needed for most simple home maintenance works. You can opt between gas-powered or electric-powered handheld units.

Backpack leaf blowers are used more often by professionals, and are mostly gas-powered. The harness, which has a blower fit into it, is worn on the operator's back. The engine and fan are also placed on the backpack frame with a hand-held hose and spout to direct the airflow. Backpack leaf blowers are typically used, and most suitable for larger areas.

Wheeled or walk-behind leaf blowers are the best for maintaining larger areas. For example, they can be used to blow away the leaves from an entire lawn. These gas-powered units are also preferred mostly by professionals and commercial users. A hose is used for the vacuum units for absorbing debris.

All About Swimming Pool Sand Filters

Swimming pool sand filters are one of the ways to keep your pool crystal clear and clean. This type of product uses sand as a means to collect and remove debris from a body of water. Sand is contained in a vessel or tank, water is pumped into the top of the tank, and into the internal distributor. This allows the pool water to "rain down" and flow through the media. As the water flows through, dirt and debris are collected and removed from the water. The debris is held behind and the clean water is returned to the swimming pool.

What are some of the items found and associated with a type of filter?
1. Multi Port Valve OR Control Valve

What are some of the functions found on a standard Multi Port Valve?
o FILTER - For normal filtering and vacuuming.
o BACKWASH - For cleaning the filter bed of accumulated debris.
o RINSE - Use after completing the backwash cycle to ensure all dirty water is rinsed from the tank to waste.
o WASTE - By-passes the tank for draining or lowering the pool water level and for vacuuming heavy debris directly to the waste line.
o RECIRCULATE - Water is recirculated through the valve by-passing the filter.
o CLOSED - Shuts off the flow from the pump to the filter

Internal Parts
2. Tank Or Vessel - Main body of the unit.
3. Top Diffuser - Allows the pool water to enter the tank and distribute the water inside the tank.
4. Media - Captures the dirt and debris from the pool water as it flows through.
5. Laterals - Located under the media, allows the pool water to exit the tank and flow back to the pool.

How are sand filters cleaned?
Most filters come equipped with a valve, commonly referred to as a Multi Port Valve. The Multi Port Valve has various settings allowing water flow to be directed in many direct directions. One of the directions is BACKWASH. In the backwash mode the water inside the tank is made to flow in reverse. Instead of the water flowing from the top of the tank down, the water from the pool is fed into the bottom of the tank through the laterals. This causes the sand to be churned, the dirt and debris which has been contained is flushed out of the tank through a separate waste line. Many Multi Port Valves have a sight glass for viewing this process. As the water is backwashed, use the sight glass to inspect the water, as the water becomes visually clean the backwash should be considered finished, the pump stopped and the valve now put in the RINSE mode. Reenergizing the pump in the rinse mode allows the water to flow in the standard operating direction and allows settling to occur in the tank. Dirty Water is flushed out to waste during this process.

NOTE: This process will lower the water level of the pool. Once the pool level is lowered additional chemicals may be needed. Retesting of the water will be required to determine the type and amount of chemicals which will be required.

What if backwashing is not enough?
If backwashing does not "clean" the media, the time has come to disassemble the unit, empty the tank and replace the sand. The media will deteriorate over a period of time, become hard and crusty, and forming channels. When this takes place, backwashing will not be enough to allow proper filtration. It is important to remember the following when performing this task.

1. If the filter has not been disassembled for some time, when removing the multi port valve, top dome or top half of the tank, remember to have new o-rings available which will be in the area of disassembly. Old o-rings stretch and crack over a period of time and need to be replaced periodically.

2. Carefully remove the old media from the tank. This can be accomplished by scooping or by using a sand vac tool (a tool which by using a garden hose and exhaust hose, vacuums the sand out of the filter tank.

3. Inspect the bottom laterals, checking for damage or cracks. Replace any laterals which are defective to prevent by-passing of sand back to the swimming pool.

4. Prepare to refill the tank with the new media (Check the instruction manual for the filter and use the size and type which is recommended).

5. Fill the tank half full with clean water

6. Slowly and carefully add the new media to the tank. Use caution not to damage the laterals during this process. Add the correct amount for the size filter being serviced.

7. Reassemble all parts removed, top half, dome, and valve, replace o-rings as required.

8. Position the multi port valve in the RINSE position to settle the new media, check for leaks, once settled, turn off pump and return the valve setting to the filter position. Restart Pool Pump and begin normal operation.

How often does the sand need to be changed?
Filter size, pool usage, bather load and weather conditions will dictate the time frame for changing and recharging the filter.

These types of filters have been utilized for many years as an effective means of swimming pool water filtration. Maintaining the filter and valve will provide many years of service, keeping your water crystal clear, enjoyable and ready for fun.

Advantages of Rechargeable Garden Hedge Trimmers

If you are lucky enough to have a garden then you probably have hedges that need regular trimming. There's a wide variety of tools available that can greatly reduce the time taken and one such garden tool is the rechargeable hedge trimmer. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of rechargeable hedge cutters to help you make a decision if you're thinking of buying one.

What is a Rechargeable Garden Hedge Trimmer?

Rechargeable hedge cutters are tools designed to greatly reduce the time and effort required to trim a hedge using manual shears. They are powered by a rechargeable battery and are therefore easily portable. The unit consists of a cutting blade, handle, rechargeable battery, and operating switch.

Advantages of Rechargeable Hedge Cutters

The major advanatge of this type of hedge trimmer is that it is cordless and is therefore very easy to move around and to use to reach otherwise difficult places to get to.

If you have a larger garden you may not have an easily available electricity supply or may be located too far away to run an extension cord making a mains powered trimmer unsuitable.

There's no messing around with extension leads or fuel required to power the unit. Simply plug the rechargeable battery into the mains and once charged the unit is ready to operate.

If you have a larger job to do you can have a spare battery available when the first starts to run out of power.

Disadvantages of Rechargeable Hedge Cutters

Rechargeable hedge trimmers can sometimes be prone to losing power when the battery begins to run low. This can be awkward as not only does it make the job of cutting the hedge harder it also requires you to return the battery to the nearest power supply and wait whilst it recharges.

The rechargeable battery can make the unit a lot heavier than a mains operated hedge cutter so it can become more tiring faster.

Getting a New Ride on Lawnmower

If you have a large garden, with a large amount of grass, then chances are you'll want to buy a ride on lawnmower to help you get around quickly. Mowing a large lawn with a push a long lawnmower can be a frustrating experience and can take a long time, so buying a ride on one hand be a great investment.

However buying one isn't always easy and there are some things you should think about before getting one. Like buying any big item you should always decide on a budget beforehand so that you know what kind of price range you are looking at before you start. Ride on lawnmower's can be very expensive so this is a good way of narrowing down your options.

You should also remember that not all lawnmowers are created equally. What I mean by this is that depending on the terrain of your garden you need to make sure you buy a lawnmower that can cope with the job. If you have a large amount of hills or rocky areas then you should make sure that your lawnmower is well-equipped to deal with these otherwise you could be in for a disappointment. Some lawnmowers will also be bigger than others so if you have a lot of narrow spaces to get through then you need to make sure that you buy one with a wheel spanned smaller that it can fit through without being damaged. These might sound like obvious things that many people forget to think of these before buying!

How To Fertilize Vegetable Garden Soil

Fertilizers, whether they are organic or inorganic, are vital for the plant growth and product yield. However, it is also important for a gardener to know the process of fertilizing a vegetable garden because improper addition of fertilizers leads to decreased yield and reduced quality of the product.

Fertilizing a vegetable garden is to be done in a two-stage process. While the first stage commences before planting the vegetables, the second stage commences during the middle of growing season.

Broadcast fertilizing: This is the first stage of fertilizing vegetable garden soil. At this stage, the gardener must replenish the garden soil with nutrients using a complete fertilizer. A complete fertilizer can be described as an incomplete fertilizer having nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the percentage of 10-10-10. However, it is recommended to get the soil tested at a registered testing center before adding the fertilizer. It is important to distribute the fertilizer evenly. This can be done using a hand spreader or a tiller. Gardener can also use some amount of organic fertilizer so as to improve the texture of the soil. The first stage of fertilizing provides the plants with essential nutrients required during the initial stages of growth.

Side Dressing: As the plant grows, many of the nutrients in the soil get used up. Hence, a second stage of soil fertilizing is required so as to provide the plants with essential nutrients and elements required to complete the growth cycle. You can use the same type of fertilizer that was used during the first stage of fertilizing. However, you have to apply the fertilizer on the sides of the plant without disturbing the roots. A deep trench has to be made around the plant with a hoe. Now, the fertilizer can be applied in the trench and the trench is covered with soil. The fertilizer gets soaked up into the soil once the plant is watered.

A Lawn Mower Bagger is an Essential Part of Your Landscaping Equipment

Taking care of an entire landscape can be quite difficult if you don't approach the task methodically. Think about taking care of your garden first. There are plenty of useful tools available for doing that. For example, you're going to need a garden hose. There are models available in varying sizes, from 25 feet all the way past 75. They are made with special materials that allow them to never kink again. Say goodbye to that headache. In addition to that, you should get a garden hedge trimmer for keeping everything neat and trim. It's like a haircut for your garden.

Now you can move onto the larger things. The lawn can be a giant task without the right equipment, so think about what you need. Do you have an extremely large yard or landscape to work with? You almost definitely should invest in a ride on mower if that is the case. There's no substitute for the power and speed these will help you complete the job. They are designed to do the job right, too. With zero turn technology, a mulching deck (for fertilizing the lawn with fresh cut grass), properly sharpened blades, and possibly even a landscape rake, you'll be able to handle any curve ball the area throws at you. John Deere, Murray, and Reel make excellent riding mowers

For the smaller yards, obviously a traditional walk behind push mower is the choice. However, you can still opt for a gasoline model or a cordless electric version. They both have their ups and downs, including the initial price point versus long term savings, as well as the sacrificed power versus louder noise and emissions. It's up to you, as you know your yard better than anyone else. If you want a gas powered engine, look at Simplicity, Troy Built, Toro, and Simplicity. For the electric kinds, Black & Decker and Honda both make reliable equipment. Factor in the right accessories (like a proper bagger; If you don't plan on mowing your lawn often you'll want a bag that holds a good amount of grass). Also, think of those hard to reach places. They almost necessitate that you get an edger as well, which are offered from companies like Worx and Mantis.

Wheel Horse Tractors Come of Age

Wheel Horse tractors have developed a solid reputation for dependability, performance, and affordability. Not many small businesses have been as successful as Wheel Horse, and even fewer machines as productive as this long-established line of hardworking garden tractors. It started in the 1920s, when a few good men decided to pool their talents and make a go at the garden tractor industry. The 1920s encouraged the daring and innovative to experiment, and so it all began with a small group of talented handymen. Working hard with spare motorcycle and automobile parts, the group sensibly united to develop a garden tractor that would take America by storm. In just a few short years, Wheel Horse founder Elmer Pond and his cohorts started a company that assembly-line built these powerful tractors. They did a whopping $4.5 million in sales by the late 1980s. This, as expected, commanded the attention of large corporations throughout the industry especially Toro, one of the leaders in the industry, who later purchased the company.

With their prudently engineered engine mount located between the legs of the driver, and a variable-speed, belt-driven transmission design, Wheel Horse tractors begun their true coming of age. Consumers also benefited from the various tractor attachments and quality-crafted engines when their plant rolled out its GT-14, which housed a 14-horsepower, large-frame design that was all the 1960s rage in garden equipment. Rear tires the size of 27 X 9.50-15, its vertical shaft engine, and the vertical input trans-axle brought it up to the next level performance wise. Thanks to this, as well as its easy handling and advanced engineering, the upstart company begun to carve out a sizeable piece of the industry for themselves.

Wheel Horse tractors are as competitive in price as they are in quality. Purchasing one is more like an investment than an expenditure because the longer you own one the more you realize its value. When Founder Elmer Pond manufactured his first tractor back in the mid '40s he could never have imagined that his creations would one day become collectors items. Today, there are several online communities and collectors groups that meet regularly to share their passion for collecting these red vintage garden tractors.

With all of its highly developed engineering, the Wheel Horse tractor has positioned itself as a front runner in the garden tractor industry. The flexibility and abundant variety of attachments make it possible to equip them for almost every consumer requirement, such as lawn renovation, driveway grading, snow throwing, and a variety of hauling needs. An old saying around the plant was that they were "speedy, sporty and spirited," and that saying still rings true today.

Pool Vacuum Cleaners Comparison Guide

For most pool owners, automatic cleaners are more than an accessory, they're a necessity. Vacuums remove leaves, sticks and other debris that, if they made their way into your pool filter system, would cause serious equipment failure.
The amount of time and labor hours saved by a good automatic pool vacuum is more than worth the initial purchase expense. The only question is: what's the best type to buy for your specific shape, depth and surface?

There are three main ways pool vacuums can function on any given surface:

o Automatic suction-side
o Automatic pressure-side
o Robotic automatic

Automatic suction-side works just like it sounds: using suction. There are no additional pump systems or plumbing aspects to add. Installation of an automatic suction-side vacuum is quite easy. It also has the added capability of scrubbing the walls of the pool as it goes along. The suction is so great that is propels the hose unit around the water, sucking up the debris and cleaning the walls of algae, bacteria, dirt, etc.
The collected debris is sucked right into your main filter basket, which seems like an asset, but can also be considered a drawback. Especially if your pool is located beneath a leafy tree. This means that there will be an inordinate amount of leaves and sticks clogging up your filter basket. Automatic suction-side cleaners are really best for people whose swimming area is clear of foliage.

Automatic pressure-side vacuums raise the level of intensity a few notches. First you've got to decide if you want to run this pressure-driven unit from your main pool pump or from a separate pump dedicated to the vacuum. If you tie it into your main pump, the biggest advantage is ease of installation and it won't cost anything extra. However, this means that whenever the main pool pump is on, so is your vacuum unit, even if you don't need it to be on. This could cause premature wear on the vacuum unit.
But if you have the resources to buy a dedicated pump system, pressure-side vacuums are great for all applications.

Robotic automatic pool vacuums are considered by many to be the all-around best. If you have the funding to buy one of these top-of-the-line models you will get a lot for you money. Most have an on-board computer chip that "learns" the shape of your pool and it will scrub walls and grout lines. Robotic vacuums also carry their own motors, filters, and improve the overall circulation of the water by supplementing your pool's main pump system.

The only real drawback to the robotic models is that they are designed to best suck up silt and dirt - so the big leaves and other larger debris will have to be removed using some other means (manual leaf skimmer or a vacuum hose made to collect the larger pieces). Also robotic vacuums are more difficult to repair due to all the fancy options - often the unit will have to be returned to the manufacturer for repair.

Whichever you choose, if you've never used an automatic cleaner, your life as a pool owner is about to get a lot less labor-intensive. These will clean, scrub, suck, and filter with almost no work required from the operator: just sit back and enjoy the sun while the cleaner does all the work!
